MOLA
The Mola is a unique, handmade reverse embroidered art made by The Republic of Panama's own Kuna indians. Several layers of different colored cloth are sewn together & the design is then formed by cutting parts of each layer away.
A Mola can take from 2 weeks to 6 months to produce depending on the complexity of the design. Since every Mola is handmade & often freehand, no 2 are identical.
The handbags that contain the West Indian/ African inspired prints such as Batik, are very distinctive & special in their own way as well. Some fabrics have a waxed overlay, metallic details & are limited in quantity.
Batik cloth traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Modern advances in the textile industry has extended to include fabrics which incorporate traditional batik patterns even if they are not produced using the wax-resist dyeing techniques.
